What is a Registered Dietitian?

Registered Dietitians are health care professionals who are licensed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and can legally practice medical nutrition therapy.  We have extensive training  in counseling as well as base our practice on proven science.  The difference between a Registered Dietitian and a certified nutritionist,  nutrition coach or health coach  is that we (RD's) complete an accredited program of extensive course work including anatomy and physiology, all kinds of chemistry, food science and communication courses.  We also have to do 1200 hour internship where we learn and get hands on experience with different conditions that warrant medical nutrition therapy.  On top of that, we have to take a licensure exam and keep current in an ever evolving field with continuing education courses, so we know what we're talking about. A nutritionist on the other hand, takes a brief course and is not required to pass any sort of licensure exam or keep current with continuing education.
